I used to support Reparations. My arguments were similar to Ta-Nehisi Coates’ who makes a compelling case in a piece currently running in the Atlantic Magazine.
Coates’ argument would have been great right up until November 4th 2008. After that day the value of being Black in America went up 1,000 fold.
This is the part to where everyone’s eyes roll because they think I’m stupid. Certainly the election of the first Black President doesn’t end all our troubles, can’t be payback for 450 years of Slavery, Oppression, Discrimination and Racism?
Not what I’m saying at all. What I’m saying is now we have something that Whites want. Something that they’d be willing to bargain for.

What, you thought they’d give you Reparations for nothing? No it doesn’t work that way. At the end of the day 99.9% of Whites think Blacks are inferior and begging for Reparations doesn’t do anything to change that belief.
We’re coming to Whites asking them for Reparations they aren’t offering. So with the ball in their court they get to set the terms of the deal; its Obama for Reparations take it or leave it(but please take it cause we can’t stand him and his success is calling into question our genetic superiority).

If Whites being in power doesn’t convince you they’d want something in return for Reparations, we need look no further than Native Americans who’ve had to give up their property rights to live on Reservations which have become Nations within’ a Nation.
Jews didn’t get reparations not from America and rightfully so since it was the Germans who committed those atrocities.
The Japanese Americans who were illegally detained during WWII received Reparations and then were regulated to areas populated mostly by Blacks and Asian immigrants.
To this day while most Japanese Americans live a very comfortable middle class lifestyle, they are no where to be found in the seats of power in politics or business outside of their mostly segregated communities.
We can’t be certain but Reparations came at the cost of political and business power for other ethnicities, a fate that wouldn’t move our community forward and would most likely set us back- especially with a disgraced Obama as our example.
I read Coats article looking for what he considered fair compensation for 450 years of White Tyranny but other then a generic plea for economic parity there was nothing specific. Never has any group received economic parity as compensation for past wrongs and I’d doubt Whites would start now.
What I don’t like about Brothers and Sista’s that work for the 98% Conservative owned media is the pressure their White bosses put on their Black employees to advance the myth of White supremacy.
It sticks out like a sore thumb in all their articles. When Obama did his Brothers Keepers initiative it was Coates and them who poo pawed the program as too little too late, reassuring their White bosses that racism is institutional and systemic and nothing Obama can do will change it.
What Coates’ bosses want to hear from him is that Blacks are indeed inferior and Obama’s success hasn’t changed a thing. Whites get to feel sorry for Blacks and negate Obama’s success while they continue to try to find a way to destroy him.
The solution is not to push for Reparations that will put Blacks on Reservations and make Whites feel superior to us more than they do already. Its to protect this President and his legacy that has returned $750,000 dollars in catastrophic care in the Affordable Care Act to each and every Black person in America.
A far more valuable compensation than $1 Dollar and a hollow apology that sets us back 50 years.
Those are my thoughts as usual I invite yours.
