Dr. Boyce Watkins posted a video blog blasting the new Fox urban American drama, Empire starring Taraji P. Henson and Terrence Howard; You can see the entire video here:
I wrote in the comments section;
“As usual the good Dr. has it all wrong. The first episode was a pilot and yes Fox is Racist and looks to do Blacks no favor but still.
Ralph Farquhar(Moesha, South Central, Married With Children, Parkers etc.) taught us to take the money let them think the show will be like “Good Times”(Dynomite!) then when you get the money you make the best damn show you can–what the hell they gonna do about it– especially when they see the ratings.
Watkins; We should only embrace 10% of our culture.
The KEY is to stop putting White people on a pedestal. They are not superior its all in your mind. Finally, if White people can exploit the Sopranos & the Godfather and the Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan movies Black people can exploit our Gay & Drug & Rap Culture.
The key is to stop hating our own Race & Culture and thinking of Whites as superior cause they’re not.”
The problem with Blacks only embracing the White part of our culture is that its probably only ten percent of who we are. We have to learn to separate the hatred of our culture from our need to exploit our culture in a way that insures our survival.
Empire will get better, if not people will do it like we’ve done the Tyler Perry movies or the Black exploitation movies of the 70’s. We’ll be turned off and they’ll go the way of the Doo Doo bird.
Those are my thoughts, as usual I invite yours.
